If you are about to embark on your first World of Warcraft journey for the first time, then there are all the multiple aspects of the game that you will need to learn, from gold making to PvP, and PvE. It would take an entire encyclopedia just to go into lengths about each of these aspects. For this article though, the emphasis will be on the classes of characters, including their strengths and special abilities.

I’ll talk about the Warrior first. This class gets close to the enemy and dishes out heavy damage. One of their best abilities is the tank role. This role allows them to take damage, and therefore cuts down on the attack to other members of your party.

Next are Paladins. This class can assume different roles as healers, tanks, and dishing out damage. They are also great for applying buffs to ally characters. Buffs are special spells that enhance a character’s stats, such as attack power, magic, and defense.

The next class are Mages. Mages are the spell casters of the game. They specialize in offensive spells that deal a high damage output to the enemy. Spell casting also give the Mages the advantage of attacking at a distance. While Mages benefit from strong spell attacks, they unfortunately have fairly weak armor, which equates to poorer defense.

Hunters are long range specialists and can deal effective damage from afar. This allows them to avoid close quarters combat, and minimize chances of taking damage. Hunters also stand out in that they can have a combat pet by their side. These constant companions can deal additional damage as well as act as tanks.

Priests take on a support role. Judging by their name, you can probably guess that they don’t deal direct attacks to the enemy. Instead they are the healers, and can also neutralize harmful spells inflicted on your allies.

Instead of specializing in a single role, Shamans can be whatever role is needed in the heat of battle. They can switch from healer, to attacker, to casting offensive spells.

Warlocks can call forth on demons to participate in combat. Warlocks also have spell casting abilities which allow them to cast spells that specialize in long term damage, such as poison.

The last class are Rogues. This class is best known for their stealth ability, which allows them to deal close range damage undetected. This trait allows the Rogue to slip in, get the kill, and move back out.

So there it is, the classes you have to choose from in World of Warcraft. With this knowledge in mind, you should have a better idea of which style will best suit your play preference, and stick with that class.

So you’re getting ready to roll a mage, or maybe you’re just considering a race change. And rather than go for looks, you want to make sure you are getting the best race possible for mage on Horde side. Well, this is the right place to be. I’ll talk about the benefits each race brings to the table, and help you figure out which is the best race for mage for PvP or PvE.

The first race we’ll discuss is Undead. Undead’s big thing is Will of the Forsaken, which is getting nerfed in 3.3. So Undead are going from top PvP dog to “The guys with the cool cast animation”. Will of the Forsaken will still be useful, but it will pale in comparison to the other racials. And the effect of WotF on PvE is negligible. Skip them if you are wanting to min/max.

Blood elves are the second race we will talk about. Arcane Torrent is the primary racial of note here. For PvP applications, it is one of the better ones around; an extra silence is always a great thing to have. For PvE, the mana regen from Arcane Torrent is great while you are leveling, but at max level you shouldn’t be having mana issues anyways, making it mostly useless.

The last Horde race is the always unpopular Troll. For their big racials they have Da Voodoo Shuffle, a PvP racial that reduces movement impairing effects by 15%, and Berserking. Berserking is probably the best mage racial in the game right now. For PvE, it is the biggest DPS increase you can get from a racial, and for PvP an extra damage cooldown can help you get in that last-second gib before the heals land.

The pecking order of Horde races for Mage is pretty obvious in retrospect. Undead, come 3.3, are mediocre for PvP and continue to be useless for PvE. Blood Elf is, as always, acceptable for PvP and leveling, but lacking in PvE pizazz. And Troll has an enormously powerful racial that benefits both PVPers and PvEers. As hard as it is to believe, Troll is da best.

I’ll wrap this up by reminding you to pick on racials only if you don’t mind the looks of the race. The benefit of a given racial is relatively minuscule; talents, gear, and skill are all infinitely more important. In the end, Blizzard has been working to reduce racials almost since the beginning, with nerfs and the removal of certain class-based racial abilities. It’s only a matter of time before all of them are barely worth noting, so don’t play something you can’t stand for a minor, temporary buff.
